How to make your lipstick and gloss last

There are lots of great long-lasting lipsticks on the market, as well as lip primers and sealers to help your lip colour stay. If you don't own any of these products, but have a favourite lipstick you want to wear all night long, follow these tips ...

Note: these tips work best with opaque, matte lip colours.

1. Make sure your lips are clean, dry and free of flaky bits. Try gently exfoliating first with a lip exfoliating product or soft tooth brush. .

2. Apply some moisturiser or lip balm. This is especially important if you have dry lips. Blot off excess with a tissue and let it set before moving on to the next step.

3. Beautify your lips in the following order (keeping each layer as sheer as possible)

  • Foundation: evenly smear a little over your lips after applying to the rest of your face.
  • Powder: also follow on with a light dusting after powdering your face.
  • Lipliner: a sharp lip pencil is great to give your lips definition, and to stop your lip colour from bleeding. Line all around your mouth — including right into the corners — and then lightly colour in the rest of your mouth. This will create a coloured base for your lipstick.
  • Lipstick: use a lip brush to evenly paint the colour all over your lips. Applying straight from the lipstick bullet can be tricky to control, and go on unevenly. Leave for a few seconds and blot with a tissue. (Blotting removes excess oils from the lippy, leaving the pigment and waxes on your lips.)
  • Follow with another light dusting of face powder. This will lock in the layers you've applied.
  • Hit your lips with another layer of lippy applied with a lip brush. Lightly press lips together and blot again.

4. Lip gloss is the next step, and is completely optional. While glossy lips tend to rule as far as lip trends go (especially in the warmer months) it's very important to go lightly with gloss after applying all these layers. You don't want your lips to end up looking thick and gunky.

Provided you don't kiss too many people, these tips should ensure your lippy stays on for hours

Lipgloss

To ensure lip gloss lasts for more than six minutes, try these simple steps. Before glossing, fill in the lips completely with a pencil that matches your mouth. After that, the real secret is a swipe of waxy balm — something about the consistency of Chapstick — which will create a smooth water-resistant base beneath the gloss.
